Nova Scotia Power has applied to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board, seeking approval for a consultation process to launch widespread time-of-day pricing tariffs. The company says the program would be voluntary.

It says smart-meter technology, combined with time-of-day pricing, would allow customers to manage the energy they use, track it and ultimately save money on their power bills.

A private, independent power producer with deep roots in the Maritimes is generating interest in renewable energy with its focus on small-scale wind, solar and hydro projects for communities and First Nations.

Natural Forces, based in Halifax, has recently completed a single turbine project located near Richibucto, N.B., in partnership with the Pabineau First Nation. It’s the latest of several Maritime wind projects either in development or in operation, including the first wind farm in New Brunswick at Kent Hills and the Wocawson Energy Project near Sussex in partnership with Tobique First Nation.

The picturesque town of Shediac is the testing ground for new smart-energy technologies that will help lay the groundwork for a modernized power grid and a low-carbon, energy-efficient future in New Brunswick.

The Shediac Smart Energy Community Project, developed by NB Power and Siemens Canada, is part of a four-year federally funded research and demonstration program that is the first of its kind in the province. The National Research Council of Canada is a project research partner.
